Epsilon User's Manual and Reference > Variable Reference >

shift-selecting: system variable

Default value: 0

Epsilon uses this variable to keep track of whether the currently highlighted selection was begun by pressing an arrow key while holding down the Shift key. The value 1 represents this state. In it, pressing an arrow key without holding down the Shift key will turn off highlighting. The value 2 is used for certain types of regions whose highlighting should be turned off in response to an unshifted movement key. A value of 0 means movement keys won't do anything special regarding highlighting.
